About Me

my brother's journey to healthy skin

Being the sole-guardian of my little brother since I was 19, I have had to learn how to take care of things that I knew nothing about. One such thing was finding out why his skin was always so scaly and dry. I had bought him every kind of skin moisturizer sold at the local drug store, but saw no improvement. I finally broke down and took him to a dermatologist to find out what was causing his skin to look the way that it did. After a few visits and a few tests, we were able to find out what was causing the problem and begin a treatment program that has really helped. Scalp Itching You Like Crazy? 4 Causes And How To Get Help

If your scalp is itchy this can drive you crazy. This is especially true if you have no idea what is causing this to happen. There are many things that can cause an itchy scalp, four of which are listed below. If you have problems determining the cause, you should contact a dermatologist to help you.

Your Shampoo

One of the first things you should look at is your shampoo, especially if you have changed shampoos lately. You may be allergic to the shampoo which will cause your scalp to itch. In most cases changing shampoos will take care of the problem. In some cases, you may even become allergic to your current shampoo.

Dandruff

If you have dandruff, this can cause your scalp to become itchy. This is generally easy to spot, as you will see dry flakes on your scalp as well as your clothes. Even if you have never had dandruff before, it is possible that you have developed this condition. For example, your shampoo may be drying out your scalp, making it itch. Change to an anti-dandruff shampoo to see if it helps. If the shampoo does not help, a dermatologist can prescribe you a prescription anti-dandruff shampoo that will be stronger than what you can find on the market.

Dermatitis

Dermatitis, known as atopic dermatitis, can cause an itchy scalp. This is much like eczema that you often see on the skin. If you have this, you will notice that your scalp will become very red and will also become dry. Your scalp may feel like it is burning, and it will also be itchy. Itching the scalp will cause the problem to become even worse, and can even cause infection.  In this case, you should see a dermatologist to get proper treatment.

Scabies

Scabies are bugs that are known as mites and can cause a severely itchy scalp. Mites are very tiny so you may not be able to see them well. Once the bugs get onto your scalp they will burrow down into the skin on your scalp. Once this happens, your scalp will become itchy. With this, you are often kept up at night as the itchiness is very intense. You should see your dermatologist to determine if you do have scabies. The doctor can then treat your scalp, which involves using a special type of shampoo and, in some cases, medication.
